Britain has assisted in the butchering of the Kurdish people for almost a century. Today there are calls from both the left and right in Britain to support the Kurds in Syria, in reality they are not supporting Kurdish ‘self-determination’, but are calling for the Kurds to subordinate to the British and US regimes, rallying behind imperialist action.

In 2001, the RAF who were conducting a ‘humanitarian’ patrol in Iraq returned to base to allow Turkey to bomb Kurdish villages [1]. British colonial official Gertrude Bell remarked “the RAF has done wonders bombing insurgent villages” in Kurdistan [2]. British hero Churchill’s bombing of civilians in ‘Mesopotamia’ (Kurdistan and Iraq) was summed up by war criminal ‘Bomber Harris’, “The Arab and Kurd now know what real bombing means in casualties and damage. Within forty-five minutes a full-size village can be practically wiped out and a third of its inhabitants killed or injured.” [3].  Before Iraq became an enemy in 1990, Britain supported Saddam Hussein to oppose Iran and Kurdish statehood for fear of it destabilising its allies Turkey and Iraq [4]. Britain exported £68million worth of weapons to Turkey in 1994. The same year operations against the Kurds were at their peak [5].

Only recently has Britain seen Kurds as ‘allies’, in the past it slaughtered them, undermined their struggle and assisted Turkey against them.
